Sea Island
The UBS Warburg Cup matches between a United States team and an International team were inaugurated in 2001 at Kiawah Island, S.C.. In 2003, the matches were moved to Sea Island, Ga. Arnold Palmer was the captain of the team that included Hal Sutton, Tom Watson and other top Tour players. The international team was lead by 1969 US Open Champion Tony Jacklin.

The matches took place in October that year on the Seaside Course at the Sea Island Golf Club. The competition was especially appropriate because Tom Fazio had recently completed a renovation of the course that combined two old nine hole courses into one grand seaside layout that ran along scenic marshes and tidal flats and the Frederica River, which separates St. Simons Island from the mainland.
The teams competed in match play format and the United States team was in danger of losing until Scott Hoch won the 18th hole with a birdie which resulted in a tie and allowed the U.S. team to retain possession of the UBS Cup for another year.
The competition at Sea Island further established the success of the Warburg Cup matches which were moved to Kiawah Island in 2005.

Orlando
In 1987, Larry Nelson, winner of the 1983 US Open, was playing in the Walt Disney World Classic, a PGA Tour event. Nelson, a native Georgian who had won the tournament 3 years earlier, found himself six shots behind after 54 holes. Not expecting to come even close to winning he sent his family back to Georgia and told them he would come home as soon as the last round was over. Nelson played the last round with popular Tom Kite, and the pair attracted one of the largest followings in the event’s history. Nelson birdied 17 and 18, the two toughest holes on the Magnolia Course to fire a 63 and beat Mark O’Meara and Morris Hatalsky by one shot. At the awards ceremony, event officials had set it up so that Nelson could speak to his wife by phone over the public address system. The normally placid Nelson shouted, “Honey, I won the tournament,” triggering a roar from the crowd.

Casa de Campo - Dominican Republic
In 1994, Shell’s Wonderful World of Golf televised a golf match between Freddy Couples and Ray Floyd at Teeth of the Dog, the resort’s flagship golf course designed by Pete Dye. The unofficial course record at the time was 62 by Dave Marr. Couples, who had won The Masters in 1992, was playing brilliantly and after 16 holes was 7 under. He came to the 205-yard par 3 16th and his caddie told him to hot a 4 iron. Not convinced this was the right club, Couples turned to the 5-year-old girl who was carrying the score sign and said, “Do you play golf?” “Yes,” she answered. “What do you think I should hit?” asked Couples. “I think it’s a 5,” she said. Couples then hit 4 over the green almost into the ocean and he had to scramble for a double bogey. After holing out, he turned to his caddie and said in mock anger, “If that little girl had been older, I would fire you and hire her!” The entire crowd roared with laughter in a match that further enhanced the course’s international reputation.

Tampa
Skippers Smoke House is the rage of the locals. It’s the down-home, funky ramshackle place where they serve up beer and burgers, and in the alfresco seating area, they’ve set up a plywood platform under an oak tree where some of the blues acts in the state perform. They call it the Skipper Dome.

Mise en Place is where all the movers and shakers go. It’s tucked away downtown and if you didn’t know it was there you wouldn’t notice it. Yet, it has a refined atmosphere and a splendid continental menu. For the last several years, the restaurant has represented the Bucs in the “Taste of the NFL,” a food and charity event held every year during the Superbowl.
