A special moment in Myrtle Beach golf is when the city hosted the Senior PGA TOUR Championship in 1994. The 1994 Golf Magazine SENIOR TOUR
Championship included the top 31 Senior PGA TOUR players and had up to that time the richest purse on the Senior PGA TOUR at $1.35 million.
Raymond Floyd and Jim Albus both birdied the final hole to tie at 15 under at the Dunes Club. In the sudden death playoff, the two played the club’s 18th hole five times before Raymond Floyd prevailed with a birdie.
Since the Championship was played in November, nightfall was fast
approaching and the closing ceremony was conducted in the dim, evening
twilight of Sunday, November 13, 1994. With the arrival of the Senior PGA
TOUR Championship and the ESPN telecast, it took Myrtle Beach, as a world
golf destination, to its highest level.
The Inside Scoop in Myrtle Beach
The Parson’s Table is located on Highway 17 and is located in a restored home, where the smell of ginger and fresh cooked entrees mingles with the pine scented walls. As you indulge yourself with a great meal, the proprietor, an Irish tenor, will regale you with Irish songs.
Being some 60 miles in length, the Grand Strand is full of quaint out-of-the-way places where the decibel level is lower and there is a preponderance of “locals.” These certainly include Calabash and Sunset Beach in North Carolina and South Carolina outposts like Murrels Inlet, Pawleys Island and Cherry Grove. In Calabash, you can eat top seafood on the waterway at Capt. Juel’s while watching the fishing boats come in with their fresh haul.
Like Italian food? Check out the Old Italian World Deli, a favorite of the locals on the South End. And in Murrels Inlet, T-Bones has the best ribs on the Strand, according to the locals.
