Tidewater: Coming Back to Excellence

Tidewater is widely recognized as one of the three best golf courses on The Grand Strand, and with good reason. I first played and reviewed it in 1998, and in October 2004, I played it again. My return engagement confirmed to Tidewater 12 and 13 me that this is a must-play for all Myrtle Beach visitors.

The greens have been replanted with Tif Eagle Bermuda (they used to be bent) and on the day I played the course the greens were outstanding. The course, despite some additional housing, retains its rustic atmosphere. Most of the inland holes are surrounded by woods which obscure many of the home sites around the course. A few additional homes have been built out along the marshland holes since ‘98, but these don’t impinge on the scenery. The course has a fine routing plan, with one interesting and challenging hole after another from start to finish.

I was guest of Tartan Management Inc., which owns and manages the 2- and 3-bedroom villas in Tidewater Plantation. I stayed in a luxurious three-bedroom unit overlooking the 18th fairway and the marsh and inter coastal waterway beyond. The unit has a very large living room-dining room area, high ceilings, and a screened-in porch. Bedrooms and bathrooms were splendidly appointed, offering convenience and comfort.

My complex that included my villa is one of many sprinkled throughout the heavily wooded plantation and is connected to other complexes by a well-thought-out system of clean roads. The property, aside from the gracious golf course clubhouse, also boasts a community clubhouse featuring a pool, spa and fitness center. The walkways along all the streets are perfect for an early morning amble or bike ride.

#3 at TidewaterTidewater is located between the waterway and an ocean inlet. The plantation is in Cherry Grove, a small village in North Myrtle Beach, and is convenient to entertainment, fine restaurants, and amusements. Ideal for golf groups, Tidewater also offers an ideal atmosphere for families.

Tidewater, the golf course, is managed by Myrtle Beach’s most famous property management company, Burroughs & Chapin, which also manages six other outstanding golf courses.
